Scene 1
The Grand Opening
🎭 Drape a tea towel over the couch arm as Ludo’s counter. Put the three hats beside it. Dangle the sock from Ludo’s tail or side.
Action
Ludo pops up grandly, with the sock dangling behind him.
Ludo(grandly)
Chik-chik! Hats on sticks!
Ludo
Grand opening! Please ignore the sock wearing my tail.
Action
Ludo displays the sock, cup, and bowl in a crooked row.
Ludo(confidently)
Three kitchen hats. Every head will find happiness.
Ludo
You are the Judges. Your ruling word is “FLOP!”
Action
Sprout enters slowly and stops beside the tiny hats.
Sprout(very calmly)
Poom-poom. Customer coming.
Sprout
I need a hat. Your hats look worryingly tiny.
Ludo
Tiny? These are hats of tremendous possibility.
Action
Ludo stretches the sock over one small corner of Sprout’s head.
Sprout(deadpan)
My left eyebrow feels festive.
🎉 Everyone together
Judges, practise “FLOP!” once. Now rule: “Judges? …FLOP!”
Ludo
A firm ruling. The sock has been dismissed.
Action
Ludo removes the sock. It snaps onto his own face.
Ludo
Next hat. Wider. Shinier. Considerably more cup-shaped.
Action
Ludo balances the cup between Sprout’s ears. It tips sideways.
Sprout(deadpan)
Now my right eyebrow has joined the celebration.
🎉 Everyone together
Judges? …FLOP!
Ludo
Correct. That cup has embarrassed the profession.
Sprout(gently)
I will wait. My head has nowhere else to be.
Scene 2
A Faster Customer
🎭 Prop Sprout on a cushion beside the counter. Keep the discarded sock and cup visible.
Action
Sprout sits up on the cushion and clears his throat, very slowly.
Sprout(very calmly)
Still here. Still hatless. My head remains patient.
Ludo(brightly)
Excellent. A returning customer. My favorite kind.
Action
Ludo balances the bowl on Sprout’s trunk. It wobbles like a boat.
Sprout(deadpan)
My trunk has become a harbor.
🎉 Everyone together
Judges? …FLOP!
Ludo
I heard you. The Judges remain mercilessly accurate.
Ludo
Then the cup. Again. Cups deserve second chances.
Action
Ludo hangs the cup from one of Sprout’s ears. It swings.
Sprout(deadpan)
My ear is now a bell.
🎉 Everyone together
Judges? …FLOP!
Ludo(with a slowing voice)
Yes. Another flop. Thank you for your terrible honesty.
Action
Ludo unhooks the cup. Sprout settles back on the cushion, entirely unbothered.
Ludo(quietly)
One customer. Four flops. Perhaps my shop needs a nap.
Action
Ludo slowly folds the tea towel counter once, then pauses.
Scene 3
The Final Fitting
🎭 Keep Ludo beside Sprout. Place the bowl and the cup within reach.
Action
Sprout rises from the cushion.
Sprout(very calmly)
Poom-poom. Customer coming.
Sprout(deadpan)
I remain available for your final disappointment.
Ludo(grandly, but tired)
One last fitting. One customer. Maximum hat expertise.
Action
Ludo places the bowl on Sprout and, for luck, the cup on himself.
Action
The cup covers Ludo’s eyes. The bowl pinches Sprout’s head.
Sprout(deadpan)
My entire forehead is now festive.
Action
The bowl springs off Sprout and lands upside down on Ludo, right on top of the cup.
Action
Ludo freezes, then slowly turns to look at the audience.
🎉 Everyone together
Judges, one more ruling. Cross your arms for a SWAP, then when Ludo asks, shout “FITS!”
Ludo(in a whisper)
Crossed arms. A swap! Judges, you may have saved my shop.
Action
Ludo gives Sprout the tiny cup and keeps the bowl for himself.
Action
Sprout wears the tiny cup. Ludo wears the bowl.
Ludo(softly, inviting the promised answer)
Judges? …FITS!
Ludo
They said “FITS!” I can hear perfectly through this bowl!
Sprout(deadpan)
My hat is too small. I like its confidence.
Action
Ludo keeps the bowl on his head. The two puppets settle together.
Ludo(softly)
Wrong hats, happy heads. The shop remains open.
Action
Sprout bows slowly. Ludo nearly loses the bowl.
Ludo(almost a whisper)
Chik-chik. Hats can rest.
