Scene 1
The Scene of the Crime
🎭 Bramble’s garden. The couch arm is the vegetable patch; the gap behind a cushion is the carrot hole. Puppets pop up from behind the couch back.
Action
Bramble pops up, looks left, looks right, then straight at the audience.
Bramble(not calm at all)
Don’t panic. Nobody panic. I am completely calm.
Bramble(enormous gasp)
MY CARROT IS GONE!
Action
Bramble faints backward onto the couch arm, then pops right back up.
Bramble
It was the biggest carrot in the world. It had a leafy top. We were very close.
Bramble
This is a job for the greatest detective in the meadow.
Action
Inspector Crumb rises very slowly from behind the cushion, wearing tremendous confidence.
Inspector Crumb(tiny voice, very serious)
Somebody said carrot.
Inspector Crumb
Tiny clues, big case. That’s my motto. And tonight I’ll need Lookouts.
🎉 Everyone together
You’re the Lookouts now! Whenever Crumb says “Tiny clues,” you answer “BIG CASE!” Practice: Tiny clues…
Inspector Crumb(deeply satisfied)
BIG CASE. Excellent. Consider yourselves deputized.
Bramble
Inspector Crumb! But you’re so… small.
Inspector Crumb
Small detectives fit in small hiding spots. That’s just good detecting.
Action
Crumb inspects the cushion gap through a spoon held like a magnifying glass. Behind him, Bramble absent-mindedly brushes dirt off his own paws. The Lookouts see it. The detective doesn’t.
Inspector Crumb
Aha. One carrot-shaped hole. Zero carrots. The math is not good.
🎉 Everyone together
Lookouts: have YOU seen a carrot? Check under the couch cushions. Check behind your ears. This is serious.
Action
Bramble leans out and checks a child’s ear, very gently, and finds nothing.
Bramble
Nothing! Only ears!
Inspector Crumb
Then we follow the trail. Quietly. Carrots have excellent hearing.
Bramble(whispering)
…Do they?
Inspector Crumb
No. But it sounds detective-y, doesn’t it?
Scene 2
The Trail of Clues
🎭 The garden path. Same couch, but the puppets creep along the whole length of it; the folded blanket is the potato patch.
Action
Bramble and Crumb creep along the couch in a slow, exaggerated tiptoe.
🎉 Everyone together
Help the Inspector: everyone take one giant detective sniff. What do you smell? Shout it out!
Inspector Crumb(impressed)
You smelled all THAT? Write it down, Bramble. Detectives don’t carry pencils.
Action
Crumb freezes, one tiny paw raised.
Inspector Crumb
A clue. Fresh digging. Right here in the potato patch.
Bramble
A HOLE? Who would dig a hole? Disgraceful! Outrageous! Who DIGS?
Action
Crumb looks at Bramble’s dirty paws. Then slowly out at the Lookouts. Then back at the paws.
Inspector Crumb
Lookouts. Watch those paws. The moment you spot a clue on them, shout “DIRT!”
🎉 Everyone together
See something on Bramble’s paws? Shout it: “DIRT!”
Bramble(much too fast)
Dirt? WHERE? I’ll check over here!
Action
Bramble searches the wrong cushion entirely. Both dirty paws wave in plain view.
🎉 Everyone together
He STILL doesn’t see it! Louder, Lookouts: “DIRT!”
Bramble(still looking the wrong way)
Behind me? I see only cushion! Well of course there’s dirt somewhere, I’m a rabbit, we’re a dirt-forward people—
Action
Bramble turns the wrong way one more time, then freezes — paws right in front of his face.
Bramble(very small)
…Oh. There it is. Dirt. On my own paws.
Inspector Crumb(slow and calm)
One question, Bramble. Where were you last Tuesday, at snack o’clock?
Bramble(confident, then slowing down)
Easy! I was right here, burying my carrot for safekeeping, and—
Bramble
…Oh.
Inspector Crumb
Oh.
Action
Bramble digs in the cushion gap and pulls out the carrot. Hold it up like treasure.
Bramble
MY CARROT! I hid it! From MYSELF! And it WORKED!
Inspector Crumb
Case closed. The thief was… yesterday’s Bramble.
Bramble
Yesterday’s Bramble is very sneaky. I’ll be watching him.
Inspector Crumb
There is only one fix for a mystery this silly.
Bramble
Snack for everyone! Detective’s orders!
Action
Break the carrot into pieces (or mime it) and hand an invisible carrot bite to every Lookout in the room.
🎉 Everyone together
Take your carrot bite, Lookouts. The world’s biggest CRUNCH on three. One, two, three — CRUNCH!
Inspector Crumb
Mm. Delicious. Case closed, Lookouts.
Action
All puppets line up and take a deep bow. Bramble bows so hard he tumbles over.
Inspector Crumb(soft, like a tiny bell)
Tiny clues… carrot case.
Bramble(whispering)
Goodnight, Lookouts. Guard your carrots. And check your ears.
