Scene 1
The Flood Arrives
🎭 The living-room floor is the flood — spread the blue towel. A cushion or armchair arm is Mimsy’s island. The audience is the weather, and the weather runs the whole show.
Action
Rain! Captain Waffles bounds in, shaking imaginary water everywhere. Mimsy is already perched on her island, appalled.
🎉 Everyone together
You’re the Rain Orchestra! Make the rain: pat-pat-pat your knees, soft as drizzle — and keep it going all show. When the story gets stormy, your rain grows. Watch the Captain.
Captain Waffles
I hear rain! ATTENTION! The floor has become a SEA! This is the best day of my life!
Mimsy(each word its own sentence)
This is the worst day of mine. There is water. Near my paws.
Puddle(overjoyed)
A sea?! For ME?! Quack!
Action
Puddle bellyflops onto the blue towel and paddles in blissful circles.
Mimsy
I am stranded. Marooned. Abandoned on Armchair Island.
Captain Waffles
Fear not, madam! Captain Waffles conducts rescues on Tuesdays and also always!
Mimsy
I do not need a rescue. I need the sea to apologise and leave.
Captain Waffles
Madam, you’re being a tiny bit dramatic—
Mimsy
I am not being dramatic. I am being CORRECT.
Puddle
The sea says no! Quack!
🎉 Everyone together
New job, Orchestra: every rescue plan gets ANNOUNCED, and you shout it with the Captain. All together now: “PLAN ONE!”
Captain Waffles(ceremonial)
PLAN ONE! The Heroic Jump! Simply leap across, Mimsy! I shall count you down!
🎉 Everyone together
Count with the Captain! THREE… TWO… ONE…
Action
Mimsy crouches. Wiggles. Looks at the water. Sits down and licks a paw instead.
Mimsy
No.
Captain Waffles
But the countdown—
Mimsy
The countdown was lovely. The answer is no. It’s TOO FAR, Captain.
Captain Waffles(pacing)
Storm rain, Orchestra — I can FEEL your disappointment. Right. Plan One: too far.
🎉 Everyone together
Bigger rain for the setback… and settle back to drizzle. Now announce it: “PLAN TWO!”
Puddle
PLAN TWO! Ride on me! I am a boat! I have always been a boat! Quack!
Mimsy(the word “damp” in slow motion)
You are a duck. And you are extremely… damp.
Puddle
Damp is my best feature!
🎉 Everyone together
Watch that boat closely, Orchestra. If it wobbles, warn her: “WOBBLE!”
Action
Mimsy stretches ONE paw toward Puddle’s back. Puddle jiggles like jelly. The Orchestra sees it before she does.
Mimsy(paw hovering)
You shouted “wobble.” Nonsense. This boat is perfectly—
Action
Puddle wobbles wildly. Mimsy snatches the paw back at the very last second.
Mimsy
My dignity nearly went in the sea. This plan is cancelled.
Captain Waffles(pacing)
Hmm. Plan One: too far. Plan Two: too wobbly.
Puddle
We need a plan with EVERYONE in it.
Captain Waffles
Puddle, that’s it! Not one rescuer — ALL the rescuers!
Scene 2
The All-Together Bridge
🎭 The same flood. The rescue runs from the island to the rug’s dry edge. Keep the audience rain going, softly — it hushes for the brave bit.
🎉 Everyone together
You know the ritual. The loudest one yet: “PLAN THREE!”
Captain Waffles
PLAN THREE! I am the bridge — steady as a table!
Action
Captain Waffles lies flat between the island and dry land, very proud of himself.
Puddle
And I’m the tugboat! I hold the bridge so it doesn’t wobble! Quack!
Action
Puddle braces against Waffles like a small determined tugboat.
Mimsy
And what, precisely, do I do?
Captain Waffles
The bravest part, madam. One small step.
Mimsy(suspicious)
One step.
Captain Waffles
One step. We’ve got you. Everybody holds — you step. That’s the whole plan.
🎉 Everyone together
Rain down to a hush now, Orchestra… the tiniest pats… and count her across, slow and soft: ONE STEP… TWO STEPS… THREE!
Action
Mimsy tiptoes across the Waffles-bridge with tragic elegance — one wobble on TWO, recovered with enormous dignity — and lands on dry rug on THREE.
Mimsy
…I have arrived.
Puddle
SHE’S SAFE! QUACK! HOORAY!
Captain Waffles
Rescue complete! Team of three — and one whole Orchestra! No paw left behind!
Mimsy(checking each one, amazed)
My paws are… dry.
Captain Waffles
To the towel-fort! For warming, drying, and being extremely proud of ourselves!
Action
All three puppets pile under the dry towel. Three heads poke out, with tiny breathing bobs.
Puddle
Best sea day ever. Sorry your island was so scary, Mimsy.
Mimsy
It wasn’t scary. I was simply… supervising.
Action
Waffles and Puddle look at her. The whole Orchestra looks at her.
Mimsy
Fine. The jump was too far and the boat was too wobbly. But the three of us together…
Mimsy(a small pause, then softer)
…was acceptable.
Mimsy
Lovely, even.
Captain Waffles(delighted whisper, to the audience)
From Mimsy, that’s a parade.
🎉 Everyone together
The rain is stopping, Orchestra — slow your pats… slower… and stop. Now shake your paws dry, and whisper “goodnight.”
Puddle(tiny, content)
Quack.
Action
Three puppets bow. The towel-fort bows too, somehow.
Captain Waffles(softly)
Goodnight, Rain Orchestra. Dry paws, everyone.
