🎭 Dim the lights. Drape a blanket over two chairs for Fig’s den. Sit the puppets beneath it.
Action
Fig pops out upside down beneath the blanket.
Fig(grandly)
Fox in a box.
Action
The blanket drops over Fig. One paw gives a dignified wave.
Alder(brightly)
Bump-bumble!
Alder
It’s my first sleepover. I think every noise is a monster.
Fig(dryly)
Convenient. Our den is completely out of monsters.
Action
Fig looks at the audience and raises one paw.
Fig
You are our Night Noises. Let’s practise your important job.

Night Noises, when Fig raises one paw, whisper “hoo-hoo.”
Fig(quietly)
Perfect. That sounded almost owlish.
Action
Both puppets settle. Dim the lights a little more.

Alder(with a squeak)

Action
Alder hides under the blanket, then peeks the wrong way.

Fig points behind Alder, toward the dark gap beyond the chairs.
Fig(softly)
Owl outside.
Alder
An ordinary owl. All right.
Action
Alder settles closer to Fig. Fig raises one paw again.

Night Noises, sway your whole body and call “Whoooosh! Behind you!” more softly.
Alder
Behind me again?

Alder hides deeper, turns wrongly, and shines the torch under his chin.
Alder(tremblingly)

Fig gently flutters the blanket edge like leaves behind Alder.
Fig(very softly)
Wind in the leaves.
Alder
Ordinary wind. My paws are still wobbly.
Fig(in a whisper)
Then take my paw. We’ll look together.
Action
They hold paws. Fig settles, closes both eyes, and raises one paw.

Night Noises, barely breathe “Hrrr… Behind you!”
Alder(barely audible)
Behind me?
Action
Alder hides deepest. He freezes, then slowly turns toward the audience and sees Fig.

Fig(sleepily)

Fig gives one tiny snore. Alder’s ears rise.
Alder(relieved and quiet)
Fig. Just Fig.
Action
Alder settles beside Fig. Soon, Alder gives one soft bear snore.
Fig(with one eye open)
